THE WORLD OF DUKE NUKEM 3D
The world of Duke3d is a vast world with lots of things that Duke can use, pickup, shoot, etc. This section will let you know the things you will come across.
The scenery, obviously, is the first thing you meet. There is a lot of things you will need to use, shoot, open, etc., and here is a list of things that you will always see in a level. The Duke world is very realistic, so you will see a lot of every day things in Duke Nukem.
Doors play a great part in Duke3d, because Duke is a just like you and me, so Duke has to use doors to enter buildings, rooms, etc. There are all types of doors:- swing doors, doom style doors (up and down), sliding doors. You will have to use doors a lot. Some doors won't open until you pull the switch or get the keycard.
Windows are all around in the city based levels, and most windows are breakable. This helps Duke to access places he can't get to any other way, the door may be locked, etc
In Duke3d, there is a lot of walls(bet you never knew that :), and some walls can be opened (secrets) or blown up. How do you know if a wall will do something? Look for a crack on the wall, usually means it can be blown up.
As you play the levels in Duke3d, you will see vents. Shoot these to go through them. They usually contain secrets or are needed to go through to progress in the level.
Teleporters will help you get to different parts of the level, where you may not be able to get to walking. Just step onto the teleporter and you will be teleported to a different area. Beam me up, Scotty!!
Throughout levels, cameras are all around. If you see a view screen press SPACE at it, and you will see through a camera. Press SPACE again to see another one.
Throughout the episodes in Duke 3D, you will find the Babes aka Dancers. Press the SPACEBAR at them for a nice suprise. Don't shoot them, or you could have a nasty suprise!
All throughout the game, you will meet the different enemies who want to kill you. Some are harder to beat than others, some you think are unbeatable. The following will let you know about the monsters and maybe some tips on the best way to beat them.
This type of alien is the weakest alien of them all. These aliens shoot at you with a laser pistol, and they can attack from the air using jet packs. You can kill these very easily.
Assault Captains are exactly like Assault Troopers, except the captains have a wrist-mounted Phase Induced Teleporter Device which can transport the alien to another location. Watch out for surprise attacks from these enemies!
The Assault Commander is another enemy to watch it for. When he sees you, he will fire his rockets at you. Jump out of the way of his rockets and fire some back at him. Also, keep close to him and he won't fire his rockets at you.
The Pig Cop is an evil, hard, enemy. When he sees you, he will go into a rage, and start firing his Shotgun at you, which is very painful to Duke.
The Pig Cop has another way of trying to kill you. He will be flying around in his RPV and if he sees you, he will shoot you with his side-mounted lasers. Shoot him with your Chaingun to bring him down.
These aliens are horrible looking things that fire a powerful blast of of mental energy at you, which can really hurt! Keep a fair distance away from them when shooting, so it can't hit you with its energy.
This alien is armed with a Chaingun which can pack a punch. If you are up high, watch out, because the Enforcer can jump up to and attack you.
These aliens will emerge out of eggs when Duke gets near to them. They can climb on to the ceiling and go across it, then come down on to you to suck your brains out. A quick kick will easily kill them. Try to destroy the eggs before they emerge.
Sentry Drones will come at you to collide with you, and boom! That's all these drones do. But they do pack a punch, especially when they are in a group. Keep your distance from these, and use a powerful weapon to blow them up.
You will come across this Boss at the end of Episode 1. This is the first time you will meet a very tough enemy. He either fires his Chaingun at you or throws small bombs. The best way to kill him is to keep moving, use the strafe buttons, and most of all shoot him with an RPG.
In the episodes after episode 1, you will meet this enemy. He is a mini-version of Boss1, but not so tough. Use the same tactics as dealing with Boss1, but you will be able to kill him quicker.
You will come across this Boss at the end of Episode 2. This boss will shoot almost every powerful thing at you, but he's not too clever. Use the environment around about you to weaken him then finish him off with your RPG or Devastator
You will, obviously, come across this one at the end of Episode 3. This boss will also fire everything at you, but you can do the same. When you meet, keep your distance and always move. Don't stop, or your toast! TIP: One word - GOODYEAR!
These new aliens are only to be found in the atomic/ppak version, and they are very deadly - even more than the Pig Cops! It will take about 2 rockets to kill them, but any gun will do fine. These aliens move fast, can jump high, and will claw you to death. They also fire shrink rays at you, so watch out!
This time some of the Pig cops are actually driving about in tanks. They have a chaingun and a grenade launcher just like Boss 1. And when they finally explode, you still have to deal with the Pig inside! Best to use the chaingun, RPG, or devistator. Also, they can be defeated by pressing the symbol on the back of the tank.
This end-of-episode boss is the worst yet! You can find her underwater, laying lots of Protector Drones, so watch out when you come up against her. RPG and Devistator is the best guns to beat her.
This following section will give you a low-down on all the weapons, maximum ammo, and what enemies best used on.
This pistol is the gun you start with. It isn't very powerful, but still can kill the basic enemies fairly quickly. The maximum ammo you can have for this gun is 200 rounds. It can kill the Assault Troopers and Captains in a few shots. The pistol cant be beaten for long range capabilities. If a enemy is far away, use the pistol, because it still manages to shoot accurately.
The shotgun is a fairly powerful weapon. This is the gun that the Pigcops carry. The maximum ammo is 50 shells for this weapon. It can kill a lot of the enemies in a few shots.
In the manual this gun is called a "Ripper", but I call it a Chaingun. The Chaingun is a very good weapon to fight with. The maximum ammo for this one is 200 rounds. It is best used to deal with the RPV's.
The RPG is a very powerful weapon. It can deal with most enemies with one shot. Maximum ammo is 50 rockets. This gun is best used to kill the Assault Commanders and the Bosses.
These bombs are used to blow holes in walls, or throw near an enemy to detonate it or to leave traps. Maximum ammo is 50 pipe bombs. These are best used in the small enemies.
The Shrinker is a excellent weapon that will bring the enemy down to size. Just fire it at the alien, watch him shrink, then stand on him. Maximum ammo is 50 shots. Best used with all enemies, apart from Bosses.
This new weapon which comes with the atomic/ppak version can be selected by pressing 7 twice. The gun is almost like the Shrinker except quite the opposite. It fires microwaves at the enemy, and will expand the victim until they finnaly exlode. Don't stand too close, or you may be injured. Maximum ammo is 50 shots.
As the name suggests, this gun will devastate everything around you. It fires small rockets, but still pack a punch. Unlike the RPG, you can fire this fairly close. Maximum ammo is 99 rockets. This will destroy all enemies, but is better to use it on Bosses.
TripBombs can be used on walls to activate a laser beam, that when the enemy or Duke passes through will explode. Maximum ammo is 10. Best used for traps and especially in DukeMatch.
The freezer will freeze enemies with a few shots, then you can run in and destroy them. If you don't destroy them after a few seconds the enemy will come back to life. Maximum ammo is 50 shots. Best used with all enemies apart from Bosses.
This following section will let you know about Build, how to run, install, tips and more. It will NOT teach you how to Build. There is other FAQs which deal with those parts of Build.
Build is a program that allows you to Build your own levels to play through Duke3d. Build is freeware, as long as you have the Duke CD. Hundreds of people use Build and it is a very easy to use editor.
You can find Build in the goodies/build directory on your Duke CD. If you don't have the CD, you don't have Build. Build is only released on the CD, and you should not find it on the Web. E-mail support@gtinteractive.com (I think) if it is not on your CD.
Copy all the files from the Build folder into the Duke3d directory. Make sure that it is not in a sub directory in the Duke3d directory as you will come across problems.
To run build, make sure you are in the Duke3d directory, then type build and press Enter. You can also start it with build mapname, where mapname is the map you want to edit. It can either be an existing one, or one you are going to start.
I get a garbled screen when I switch to 3d mode
Make sure Build is in the Duke3d directory and not in a sub-directory. Build needs to access the art files that are stored in Duke3d.grp, and it can't in a sub-directory.

These following tips should help you to do things more easier and save you lots of time. These tips and bug fixes are by Derek (aka NutWrench). If you have any, e-mail me them.
While viewing the tile selection, if you press the "/" or the "*" key on the keypad, you can change the size of the tiles. Great for those teeny-tiny tiles.
Select the sectors you want to lower and raise in 2d mode by pressing Alt Gr (or right Alt). Then go into 3d mode and press PageUp and PageDown while aiming at the floor, and it will raise or lower the selected sectors at once. Saves time if you have a lot of sectors that you want to make the same height.
Select the sector/sectors you want to rotate. Now use the
to rotate the sector/sectors. Also use SHIFT+ to rotate in small increments. This is a great tip if you are designing a Dukematch map designed around a central core, you can design a 1/4 of it, then just copy and stamp the whole section 3 more times rotating as you go. Excellent!
Select the sectors you wish to delete. Make sure you have selected the correct sectors, then press Right Ctrl+Delete, and it will delete the selected sectors. Much quicker than deleting one sector at a time.
The copy and paste function will allow you to preview what your joined sector will look like. Move your flashing sectors into the position you want, but don't release the Alt key. If you switch to 3d mode, you can check to make sure everything's ok before you release the sectors.
In 2d mode, if you press the F6 key, it will show you the next available tag. No need to keep track of which tags you've already used. If you press the F6 key while aiming at a sprite, you will get a helpful listing of all the Sector Effectors at the bottom of the screen. Pressing F7 gives you a listing of the Sector tags.
In 2d mode, press '0 (apostrophe and zero), and your map will shrink about 50%.
Want to stop people from ripping of your maps? Use a dos utility, which will be found at DukeWorld, and shift your entire map up/down/left/right. You can now build very large levels, or move your map outside the boundary of Build, which means no-one can edit it.
You can make scrolling bulletin boards, or even a weather report, like in E4L1. Just make the letters slide across the conveyer belt, and it will give you an excellent effect.
Does anyone know the point of ForceSphere, tile 2590? Put one in your level, start it up, fire your weapon, and sit back and watch.
After copying and pasting a sector, you sometimes see a wall stretching up to the ceiling that wasn't there before. Pressing "M" doesn't make it go away. Go back in to 2d mode and select the problem sector using Alt Gr (or Right Alt) and the mouse as though you were going to copy it. Then, without moving it, press Alt Gr (or Right Alt) to release the sectors. Go back to 3d mode. The problem should be gone.
How to fix dangling red line segments
A red line segment with 2 points is in your map. Moving the points together gets rid of the line segment, but corrupts the rest of the map even further. Create a triangle, with the problem segment as one of the walls. You should now have a triangle with two white lines and one red line. Now, collapse the sector (don't use Ctrl+Delete), getting rid of the red line segment first. Done!
Long range weapons not working correctly. Build has problems with weapons and LONG sectors. Pistols and shotguns fired in such sectors (like humongous outdoor areas) sometimes "stop short" before reaching the wall. The result is bullet holes and shotgun blasts hanging in mid-air. The solution is to break up the long wall by adding a few extra points along its length. The problem will go away.
The following section will give you info on Editart, and how to install, and run it.. Also, some common problems and solutions.
Editart is a program that lets you add your own art to Duke Nukem 3D. It lets you make new art, or you can import it into Editart after making a graphic in your favourite Paint Package. Like Build, this is freeware, providing you have a copy of Duke3d.
You can find Editart on your Duke CD in the goodies/build folder, which means if you have already installed Build, then Editart is already installed.
How do I install and run Editart
Copy all the files in the goodies/build folder from the CD to your Duke directory.Make sure that it is not in a sub directory in the Duke3d directory as you will come across problems. The version that was shipped with the Atomic/PPak version has one file missing. Click here to read more. To run Editart, do the following:-
1. Make sure that Editart is installed.(See above)
2. At the Dos prompt, type KEXTRACT DUKE3D.GRP *.ART followed by ENTER
3. Type Editart followed by ENTER, followed by Y when prompted.
4. If it doesn't run, go to the next section.I just get a blank screen when I run Editart
Most of the time it is because the Art files haven't been extracted or Editart isn't in the same directory as the art files. Type KEXTACT DUKE3D.GRP *.ART followed by ENTER to extract the Art files. This should fix the problem.
I get an error saying "Dos4gw not found"
The version that was shipped with the Atomic/PPak version is a later version than the one with 1.3 This version requires Dos4gw.exe to run Editart. You can download it here. You will probably have it on your hard drive already. Most Dos games have it, Tombraider has it, Realms of the Haunting, etc. Just take a copy from there and put it in your Duke directory.
---------------------------------------------------
COMMON QUESTIONS AND PROBLEMS
This section will answer the questions that are mostly asked and address known problems and solutions.
The common problem for Duke3d not starting is that you have not run SETUP. Type SETUP at the dos prompt in the DUKE3D directory, and correctly configure your sound card, video mode, etc. Then go to SAVE AND LAUNCH DUKE NUKEM 3D at the bottom and press ENTER
I now get a message saying "Playback failed, possibly due to an invalid or conflicting DMA channel"
This means that you have set your sound card details wrong, or your sound card is conflicting with another device. To fix this, try the settings in the setup program to another DMA number until you find the correct setting.
My mouse doesn't work in Duke3d
Make sure you picked the KEYBOARD AND MOUSE option in the SETUP program. You will find it in CONTROLLER SETUP then CHOOSE CONTROLLER TYPE. If it still doesn't work, make sure the mouse drivers are loaded. You should either type MOUSE at the DOS prompt, or install the drivers that came with your mouse. Also, make sure it is plugged in, you never know!
My mouse doesn't control Duke's aiming
Press U to turn on mouse aiming. Press U again to turn it off.
The game crashes and returns me to my desktop
This is very simple to answer: Play Duke3d through DOS. It is a DOS-only game and is not designed through windows. You get more memory through DOS because you don't have windows using most of it. You can run it through windows without crashing if you have more than 16 Mb RAM.
I accidentally pressed the Windows key and the game crashed
Either run it through DOS as discussed above, or install DosKEY. This utility will turn off the windows keys and CTRL+ESC (another windows key shortcut). You will find this utility on the Atomic/PPak CD or on any shareware sites.
When I started to play Duke3d, the game freezes
There is a few solutions to this problem. One could be not enough memory, or not enough processing speed. Another is your video card. Your drivers may need to be updated. Go to your manufacturers web site and download the latest drivers. You can also install Univbe, which you will find on the Duke3d CD.
When I install the Atomic/PPak version I get an error saying that I need more than 8 Mb of memory to install this, but I have 64+ Mb of memory!
You need to download the v1.4 to v1.5 patch. The original 'install.exe' had a bug in it that would prevent anyone from installing it with more than 64 Mb of memory. The patch lets you install it and means that your version is 1.5. It also fixes lots of other problems too. You can download it here. Want to know how to use the patch? Click here.
When I install the Plutonium Upgrade I get an error saying that I need more than 8 Mb of memory to upgrade, but I have 64+ Mb of memory!
I have the Atomic/PPak version and my joystick will not work.
One problem can be because you have version 1.4 of the Atomic/PPak. You need to install the v1.4 to v1.5 patch. It may fix the problem with your Joystick. I say may, because some Joysticks still don't work after the patch is installed. Depends on your make of joystick. You can download it here. Want to know how to use the patch? Click here.
I'm sick of always putting my CD in the drive everytime I want to play. How do I stop it from needing the CD?
The reason for needing the CD in the drive all the time is to try and prevent piracy. There is a crack that will patch Duke 3D to not check for the CD every time you start. This file should only be used if you own Duke3d v1.4/1.5. This file isn't supported by 3DRealms, so if it damages your computer then don't come complaining. You can download it here.
I'm stuck. How do I get past this bit?
As you progress through Duke3d, you will find that you will get stuck. But don't worry,
because its usually something you missed. Backtrack to the beginning of the level, and
make sure you have pressed all switches, picked up all key cards, explored everywhere.
Also, use the viewscreens, because they can sometimes help you.
I've finished all the levels on all the settings, what now?
There is lots of things you can do. Here is a list of some of the things you can do.
As well as Build, there is a utility know as EDITART. You can make your own art and put it into the game. You can either make your art in Editart or make it in a Paint package, and import it into EDITART.
On that thing people call the Internet, there is hundreds of sites dedicated to Duke3d. And on these sites, there is levels which you can download and play in Duke3d. There is a list of sites at section [8.4] where I have added links to the sites I think provide the best user maps to be found.
First make sure you have unzipped them. Download Winzip at http://www.winzip.com/, then unzip the levels into the Duke3d directory. Now, run SETUP and go to USER LEVEL SELECTION and pick the level you would like to play. Then go to SAVE AND LAUNCH DUKE NUKEM 3D and press ENTER. You can also type the following at the DOS-prompt - duke3d -map mapname where mapname is the name of the map (you do not need the .map extension). Alternatively you can download a Map launcher that will run the maps for you.
All over the web, there is sites with Total Conversions (TCs). TCs are new episodes for Duke3d. And nearly all of them are free. These episodes have new art, monsters, weapons, and levels, and are usually based around a well known theme, like a movie, etc. There is a list at section [8.4]
This is one of the things that most people do after (maybe even before) they complete Duke3d. Sure killing the aliens through the game is fun, but how about playing against friend. A real opponent can think, so they can beat you lost of ways. They can lay traps, things that the enemy wouldn't do in the game.

In this section, I will get you a walk through of full game of Duke3d (NOT ATOMIC/PPAK AT THE MOMENT) The walk through will not tell you where the enemies are, or where health, weapons, etc, are unless needed to progress. It will however tell you where keys, switches, etc, are. Always try to get through the levels without using this walk through, only use if you have to.
