Common Problems and Fixes:
Problem: I am receiving an error about a missing setup.cfg and to run the setup.exe file when I attempt to run the game
Solution: This will occur if the sound setup has not been run before attempting to run the
game. You will need to do the following:
From the C:\INTRPLAY\REDNECK\> prompt you should now be able to type RAMPAGE
and hit enter to start the game.
Problem: Getting the error message "IPX &
NetBIOS not detected"
Solution: Before you set up a network game for the first time, your computer needs IPX
drivers installed before you begin. An IPX driver is an optional component of Windows 95
installation, and DOS IPX drivers are also available in the Novell NetWare client. You
will have to obtain these drivers from another source; they are not included on this
CD-ROM and we can't assist you in getting IPX drivers or configuring your network.
Problem: The sound and animation is *very* jerky.
Solution: This will happen if you run Windows 95 and have only 16MB RAM. On a few systems
with Windows 95, it will happen no matter how much RAM is in your machine. It may also
happen on computers running plain DOS (without Windows 95) if some other program like
SMARTDRV.EXE is taking up a lot of memory. The first thing to try, as mentioned in the
printed reference card, is to restart your computer in MS-DOS mode before you play. You
can do this automatically by double-clicking the "Rampage" shortcut located in
the "Redneck" directory on your hard disk. The additional memory freed up by the
absence of Windows 95 should let the game play much faster.
Problem: When I restart my computer in MS-DOS mode
and try to play the game, I don't get any sound.
Solution: If this happens, it means your computer wasn't configured properly at the
factory to make use of your CD-ROM drive, sound card, or mouse. You will want to contact
the manufacturer of your sound card to get updated DOS drivers and any installation help
you may need.
Problem: I launch the game but it just displays a
black screen and locks up.
Solution: This happens on the ATI Mach32 video card with certain versions of ATI's VESA
driver software. If you have a Mach32, try using the VESA video driver that came with the
video card. (We have seen problems using newer versions of the VESA driver.)
If you have a different video card, contact the video card company to obtain a VESA
driver. This is usually available on video card companies' World Wide Web and BBS sites.
Problem: This game is too dark!
Solution: Adjust your monitor first, *then* press ESC and choose Options and then adjust
the screen brightness.
Problem: There's an awful lot of profanity in this
game.
Solution: Really? For even more, visit http://www.interplay-store.com and get the Cuss!
Pack. If such terrible language is too much for you, you can press ESC, choose Options,
and then choose "Parental Lock" (and optionally lock the game into Parental Lock
mode with a password). This will screen out the blood gibs and *some* of the profanity. (Note:
The cuss pack will cost you to download)
Problem: My network game is giving lots of
out-of-sync errors.
Solution: First, turn monsters off. Then try fewer players (6 is very fun and seems
optimal).
Network problems can be caused by many different things. Below are some troubleshooting
tips that may help you with your problem:
* Our network games require that IPX protocol network drivers be loaded. Make sure that
your IPX protocol network drivers are installed and working properly. These drivers are
normally provided along with the network card on a floppy diskette, and can easily be
installed to the hard drive. If you do not have any IPX network drivers, you will need to
contact your network card manufacturer to receive those drivers.
* Make sure that you have the latest IPX protocol drivers. If you are not sure, or haven't
updated your drivers within the last 3 months, check the network card manufacturer's
Internet site or contact your manufacturer directly to find out if there are any more
recent drivers for your network card.
* Make sure that all of the network cables are firmly connected and that there is no
problem with those cables, i.e., there is no damage to the cables, etc. Check the plugs on
the back of your computer, specifically the ones running to/from your network card.
* Make sure that the network card is firmly seated on the motherboard.
* Other drivers may be running that cause problems with the network interrupts. These
conflicts may not emerge when performing other LAN tasks that either don't use IPX or have
layers of error-checking. Try removing unneeded drivers from your CONFIG.SYS and
AUTOEXEC.BAT files, and running with a completely clean configuration.
* Try running the network card diagnostics program(s) to make sure that there are no IRQ
conflicts, or similar conflicts. Also, doing this will help you to determine if there are
any problems with the network card itself.
* If you have another separate network card you can swap with the network card in the
computer, try swapping them to make sure there is no problem with the network card you are
currently using.
If you are still having problems at this point, you may want to contact the manufacturer
of the network card for further troubleshooting help. Thank you for your patience in this
matter.
Problem: The game plays too slowly.
Solution: Make sure that in the SETUP program you set the screen size to be 640x480. If
you set the screen to a higher resolution (like 640x480) then the game will run much
slower.
Within the game, press "-" repeatedly to shrink the size of the game window.
This will speed up play quite a bit.
Problem: I do not receive CD Audio from the Redneck
Rampage disc or any other CD.
Solution: There is a problem with Mitsumi CD ROMS. If you are playing in Windows 95 we
suggest that you take advantage of the CD Player in Windows. If you are in DOS we suggest
that you launch the CD utility that comes with most major sound cards.
Problem: Sometimes the game acts strangely in
co-operative play.
Solution: Co-op play tends to work best with four players or less. With more players you
might experience bizarre side-effects, like weapons disappearing, players not exploding
when hit by dynamite, keys not spawning, etc. Two player co-op is highly recommended as
optimal, but four can play co-operatively with few side-effects. Anything above four
players is undertaken at your own risk.
Problem: The game seems slow and choppy.
Solution: If you are experiencing slow game play, there are some options we can disable,
or adjust that should help.
**Try running SMARTDRV.EXE in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. Make sure you add the option for
caching the harddrive you installed Redneck Rampage to. Here is an example of the
Smartdrv.exe line in the Autoexec.bat file for a system using Windows 95. If you have DOS
only, please replace C:\WINDOWS with C:\DOS.
C:\WINDOWS\SMARTDRV.EXE 2048 C:
If the game still runs too slow, try using 4096 instead of 2048. This number represents
the amount of memory Smartdrv will use. If this is set too high, your system may not have
enough free memory to run the game. If you experience any memory errors, please adjust the
Smartdrv cache to a lower setting. Also, the C: represents the harddrive letter you want
smartdrv to cache.
**If the cd is not in the drive while the "8 track player" is enabled, the video
may experience pauses. If you disable the 8-track player in options you do not have to
have the cd in the drive.
**Try turning the Ambience Off in the Sound Options from the Main Menu. This will turn off
the extra sounds you hear when you are walking around and should help speed things back
up.
**If the above does not help, you can try running the SETUP.EXE utility located in the
Redneck directory, select SOUND SETUP and setup your sound device, then adjust these
options:
NUMBER OF VOICES: select 4 or less.
NUMBER OF MIXING BITS: choose 8-bit
NUMBER OF CHANNELS: choose MONO SOUND
MIXING RATE: select 8 Khz
When using these settings for sound, the game should run faster on your system.
**You may also need to run at a lower screen resolution. We recommend using 640x480, but
if the game still runs slow at this setting, you may need to run at 320x200 for best
performance.
**If you still experience troubles, try installing the game from DOS rather than
installing it from autoplay window in Win95.
Problem: When ascending to the space ship, the game briefly shows an error message and then sends me back to Windows.
Solution: There is a conflict between the game and another piece of software loaded in Windows 95. You will need to shut down the computer and restart it in MS-DOS mode to prevent this from happening.
Problem: When starting the game, the screen scrolls and is unreadable.
Solution: If you know what kind of video card you have, you may want to contact your
video card manufacturer and request a VESA 2.0 compliant driver. However, if you don't
know what kind of video card you have, you may go ahead and contact the company that
manufactured your computer.
Another source where you can find a generic VESA driver is at SciTech Software's Web Site
on the Internet. There you can get a preview VESA driver (called SciTech Display Doctor)
that may help you with your problem. Their address is:
http://www.scitechsoft.com
Once you download it, you can run the executable to install the driver. Make sure that you
only install the UniVBE VESA driver, and not the UniPOWER and the VBE/AF Accelerator
driver. (Note: If you have the ATI Mach 64 video card, the Scitech VESA driver will
not work. You will need to contact the video card manufacturer at WWW.ATITECH.COM to get a
Vesa 2.0 compliant video driver and installation help for it).
Problem: When loading a multi-player the game locks up or does not load them.
Solution: The save game feature only works with single player games. For multi-player
games, you are instead given the option to choose which episode and level you wish to
start at.
Problem: I have an ATI video card using the M64VBE driver and am having video troubles with the game.
Solution: Try running the M64VBE with the following switches:
