QuAdS ===== The Quake Add-on Starter v 3.5 QuAdS is a Windows front-end for id Software’s amazing game Quake. As the name implies, QuAdS is especially designed to work with the numerous add-on patches, conversions and levels widely available for Quake. QuAdS also features loading of saved games, demos/movies and configuration files, setup of multiplayer games, network and other Quake parameters, a Quake name maker and saving of configurations to double-clickable .qas files. The newest feature is ability to retrieve information about Quake/QuakeWorld servers over the net! What's new in v 3.5? ==================== - Ability to retrieve server information (Quake/QuakeWorld)! - Server connect/setup separated. - Random level selection. - Play up to 8 demos sequentially (requires that "startdemos" statement is removed from quake.rc). - "Samelevel" parameter added to server setup. Installation ============ - If you got "quadssetup.zip" - unzip it and run the setup program. This will install all necessary shared VB5 files. Get "quadssetup.zip" here: ftp.cdrom.com/pub/idgames2/utils/frontends/quadssetup.zip - If you got the "quads.zip" upgrade - unzip it into your QuAdS directory. The latest executable, help file and level images can always be found here: http://www.dd.chalmers.se/~f94jowe/Quake/ Main features ============= - QuAdS automatically finds all your game directories - even if they don’t reside directly under your Quake directory. So you can for example have all total conversions in Quake\TC\, thus reducing the clutter of directories. - QuAdS finds all levels - both standalone .bsp files and levels included in .pak files. The same applies to demos. - QuAdS shows a preview image of the selected level, if available. - Bored? Play a random level! - QuAdS extracts the title of the level when you select a level or a saved game. For saved games the number of kills is also shown. - QuAdS shows a descriptive text file for the selected modification or level, if available. - You can specify your Quake executable and additional parameters. Five different settings are remembered. - Name editor with all characters of the Quake font as bitmaps. - Save configurations to clickable QuAdS script (.qas) files. To save a .qas file click the Preview button and select "Save script...". - Available configuration files are listed. You can select one or more to load when Quake starts, and edit them by double-clicking. - Context-sensitive help. - All settings are remembered between sessions. Multiplayer game support ------------------------ - Join a game - select from a list of your favorite Quake/QuakeWorld servers, with name/description. - When you click on a server QuAdS will retrieve information about the server and players over the net! - Record QWD (QuakeWorld Demo) - Start a game - setup a dedicated or listen server. - Setup parameters as your hostname, maximum number of players, time- and fraglimit, other game rules and level to start on. Quake configuration ------------------- - Network configuration - disable some or all of Quake’s network features. Change the default port numbers. - Memory configuration - setup how much memory you want Quake to use under Windows, and (for DOS Quake) how to allocate it. - Disable CD audio and joystick support. Notes about text files and images ================================= - When you select a game directory QuAdS looks for a text file called either "readme" or the same as the directory (i.e. select game directory "hipnotic" -> QuAdS displays "hipnotic\readme.txt" or "hipnotic\hipnotic.txt"). - When you select a level in ID1\maps QuAdS looks for a text file with the same basename as the .bsp file (i.e. select level "Village" -> QuAdS displays "id1\maps\village.txt"). - When you select a level QuAdS looks for an image in ID1\maps or, if the level is in the selected game directory, in the maps subdirectory of that directory. That is, if you select the game directory "hipnotic" and the level "hip2m2" QuAdS will display "hipnotic\maps\hip2m2.jpg", "hipnotic\maps\hip2m2.gif" or "hipnotic\maps\hip2m2.bmp". - The size of the image window is 400x300 pixels, so that is the preferred resolution of the screen shots. Smaller images are enlarged, which gives lesser quality, and larger images take up unnecessary disk space. - I set "r_drawviewmodel 0", "viewsize 120" and "crosshair 0" with an alias before taking a screenshot, and then use Paint Shop Pro to increase the brightness and contrast of the images, before saving them as JPG files. - Check out http://www.dd.chalmers.se/~f94jowe/Quake for zip files with screenshots of popular levels. ----------------------------------------------------------- Send comments, suggestions, questions and bug reports to: Johannes Weiman f94jowe@dd.chalmers.se http://www.dd.chalmers.se/~f94jowe/Quake Legal stuff ----------- QuAdS is freeware.
