Example8 - Func_areaportal This is a handy r_speeds fighter that is customarily placed inside doors separating two or more distinct regions of a map. When in example8.bsp, stay where you start, type "r_speeds 1" without the quotes at the console, and shoot the button directly ahead of you. The doors will open, and the r_speeds will suddenly shoot up to about 120. When the doors close, the r_speeds will drop back to a lower number. You want low r_speeds as much as possible to keep the framerate high. With 3Dfx cards this seems a moot point but I digress... It is important to make sure that every func_areaportal is isolated correctly; if you have multiple connecting portals/doorways between one area and another, each has to be blocked with a func_door/areaportal rig. Try removing one of the func_areaportals in example8 and you'll get an error message while compiling. Think of this requirement as being analogous to avoiding map leaks, except this time it happens within the confines of the level. Have fun!
